Examining landowners' preferences for a chronic wasting disease management program

Abstract Private landowners are key partners in chronic wasting disease (CWD) management, especially landscapes where there is limited public ownership. In this study, we evaluated landowners' preferences for alternative hypothetical CWD management programs using a stated choice experiment. We were particularly interested understanding the use of financial incentives to motivate white‐tailed deer harvest and facilitate hunter access private lands as potential tools. used latent class analysis characterize preference heterogeneity among stemming from patterns choice. compared means distributions auxiliary variables related perceived risks, trust, attitudes toward sociodemographics across classes model results. The pooled demonstrated that reducing population density, providing payments CWD‐positive taken their property, form access, banning recreational feeding had small positive effect on respondents' program. However, hunters harvesting targeted culling opposite Latent models revealed majority respondents exhibited pattern all forms exerted negative choice, but smaller subsets positively evaluate some incentives.
